Boxing: Joe reigns supreme
Joe Manning
TEENAGE sensation Joe Manning is just one fight away from boxing for England in the Four Nations.
The Ferry Street Boxing Club youngster booked his place in the finals of the Schoolboy ABA National Championships at the weekend when reigning supreme to beat London and Home Counties finalist Liam Lyton
Manning, 12, will now meet Midlands champion Ben Vaughan, from the Kings Heath Club, for the right to fight for his country.
Proud Ferry Street coach Mel Payne said: “To get someone through to the finals is a big, big achievement for a small club like Ferry Street.
“Joe boxed the kid’s head off. He sat back and picked him off almost at will and in the end it wasn’t even close.
“I will just tell him to go out and enjoy the final as he’s got nothing to lose and everything to gain.
“He is very defensive but he is looking good and extremely confident.”
The Ferry Street hitter controlled Saturday’s contest from start-to-finish with an impeccable display of boxing to claim the judges’ verdict by a 12-6 margin.
Saturday’s class 1 42kg final will take place in Mansfield.
