Feltwell’s Charlie Wakefield won all three titles at the recent Norfolk Junior Badminton under-11 championships.

The boys’ singles was split into two groups.

Wakefield raced through his group, winning all four matches easily to reach the semi-finals.

In the same group, Downham’s Jamie Salas Brown tied with Norwich’s Louis Davis on two wins each, so the other semi-finalist was decided by the fact that Salas Brown beat him in a close game 21-20.

Leo Fonzo only just missed out on the tie, after winning one game and just losing another by 20-21 points.

In the other group, Wakefield’s younger brother, Harry, finished runner-up to also progress to the semi-finals, winning three games and losing just one game 21-19 to the group winner Aruneesh Velu, from Norwich.

Unfortunately, this meant that the brothers had to play each other in the last four and the older Wakefield won by 21-10, 21-13.

Salas Brown lost his semi by 21-9, 21-11.

Wakefield continued his good form to take the title, defeating Velu by 21-10, 21-12.

His second title of the day came in the boys’ doubles, where Salas Brown and himself won all three matches relatively easily.

Dale Hellard and Harry Wakefield finished just out of the medals in third place.

Jessica Bateman, 10, from Dersingham, played very well in the girls’ singles event, winning five of her six matches, with her only defeat coming against eventual winner, Caitlin Parfitt, from Norwich, to take the runners-up trophy.

The girls then paired up to take the doubles title, winning both their matches in straight games.

The final event, the mixed doubles, was won by Charlie and Caitlin, winning all their matches in straight games, with Jessica Bateman and Dale Hellard runners-up.

West Norfolk Junior Badminton is sponsored by Roythorne’s Garage, of North Wootton.
