A BADMINTON club set up two years ago has grown from a handful of players to a maximum of 30 members with some already making their mark at county level.

The club gained three podium places in the U9s Moderates Tournament in Norwich on Saturday. Victory went to Charlie Wakefield with runner-up Jamie Salas-Brown secured a 21-19 win over Harry, Charlie’s six-year-old brother. Jamie and Charlie paired up for a comfortable win in the doubles.

Joe Rolfe won a county-wide Moderates tournament at Lynn just before Christmas. Moderates tournaments are for young players not yet in a Norfolk junior squad, which is open to under 11s with teams for U13s, U15s and U17s age groups.

Club founder Helaine Wyatt said: “The boys did really well, although we are proud of all our players. They are a great bunch who are very enthusiastic and responsive.

Helaine played badminton herself for many years and in 1999 became Norfolk’s first badminton development officer.

After a spell away, due to her husband’s work, Helaine returned to Downham and was drawn back to the sport and the junior club began.

She said: “The support we have from parents is excellent, they are always willing to take the children to tournaments and they help on club nights, too. We have three other qualified coaches and assistance from a Duke of Edinburgh student, so each group has a coach.

“Anyone who plays two or three times a week with some coaching is going to improve,” said Helaine, who also has players from the high school playing at a Center Parcs tournament for the first time at the end of the month.
