Lynn, Rowing: Adam strikes gold for Great Britain

DOWNHAM rower Adam Hughes (pictured right) recently struck gold for Great Britain in France.

Hughes and his doubles partner Sybren Hoogland competed against the French national champions in the annual GB v France J16 international.

The duo won the 1500m race comfortably, leaving the French competitors lagging behind after only a few strokes, to take the gold medal.

This was after their practice rows the previous day, in which they achieved 96 per cent of the world standard gold medal times over 500m.

Victory in Nantes adds another gold to their already impressive record, even though their partnership is still in its infancy.

Hughes and Hoogland only started rowing together in February, after Hughes joined the Norwich Rowing Club in January.

They have won a number of events this year, including victory in the final of the GB v France trials against the best 16-year-olds in the country.

Winning the event, which was held in Nottingham, ensured they represented Britain in the international race.

This followed a national title and gold medal at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta in April.

Their next race is in the National Rowing Championships of Great Britain, where they are favourites to win their third gold of the year.
