Sport - Horseracing: Fakenham vow to eradicate problem

Fakenham Racecourse have vowed to do everything in their power to avoid a repeat of young jockey Brendan Powell’s error during a dramatic day of racing on Tuesday.

Powell was suspended by the stewards for 14 days after taking the wrong course.

His mount Benny the Swinger, the 5-4 favourite in the Conditional Jockeys’ Chase over two miles, was booked for victory when pinging the last fence.

But instead of heading for the winning post the pairing continued and jumped the fence in front of the main stand.

This left the way open for Roc de Guye, last year’s winner of the race, to repeat his triumph but labouring on the run-in he was just caught on the line by Peak Seasons.

The opening Wensum Selling Hurdle, over two miles and four furlongs provided bottom weight Me Fein, ridden by Paul Maloney, with a win.

The Great Snoring Beginners’ Chase over three miles went to odds-on favourite First Fandango, ridden by five-pound claimer Michael Byrne.

Main rival Brady, under Jason Maguire making a rare visit to the track, lost his chance when almost falling with a circuit to go.

There was more drama in the Murfitts Industries Novices Hurdle over two miles when joint-favourite Amok was threatened by rank outsider Scotsbrook Legend at the last.

But with an upset on the cards, a crashing fall saved the day for punters with Amok, under Dougie Costello, left on his own.

Devon trainer Nick Williams made the 540-mile round trip from his South Molton yard worthwhile by taking the Weatherbys Bank Mares’ Chase over three miles with Misstree Dancer.

Jumping superbly, under jockey Nick Scholfield, the pairing saw off favourite Midnight Macarena.

The Fakenham Novices’ Hurdle, also over three miles, developed into a two-horse race between the rival favourites.

Another long-distance traveller, Everdon Brook from the Darlington yard of David Thompson, saw off Future Dominion to win by 14 lengths.
