Sport - Swimming: West Norfolk secure runners-up spot

West Norfolk Swimming Club competed in the Junior Fenland League Final, where they managed a fantastic second place at Newmarket.

This was the culmination of several months of competition against teams from this region.

In the final they were up against teams from Ely, Peterborough, Bottisham and Mildenhall.

West Norfolk got off to a perfect start in winning the opening four races, putting them in an eight-point lead.

Peterborough then produced some strong swims to take them to a slender lead over West Norfolk at the halfway mark.

Although West Norfolk relinquished the lead, a succession of personal bests kept them in contention until the last few races.

This all made for some exciting viewing.

As always, the team showed great tenacity and superb team spirit for which they must be commended.

Peterborough just edged ahead to take the overall title of Junior Fenland League winners for 2012 with West Norfolk in a very creditable second place.

The club would like to thank all the parents for providing transport and support on the night and throughout the season.

Thanks also go to team manager Teena Venables, and all the poolside helpers.

We would also like to express thanks to those swimmers who competed in the earlier rounds but missed selection for the final.

Their contribution was invaluable in putting the team in strong contention in the final.

Overall results: 1 Peterborough B 154 points, 2 West Norfolk 138, 3 Bottisham 113, 4 Ely 94, 5 Mildenhall 33.

Individual winners for West Norfolk Swimming Club on the night were: Klaudia Labuz 100 I/M 12 and 13/under, 50 breast, Harry Thompson 50 back and 50 fly, Kayleigh Venables 50 back, Alex Florence 100 I/M.
