WEST Norfolk junior badminton player, Dominic Ely, from Springwood High School, enjoyed a double triumph at the recent Norfolk Schools Badminton under 14 championships in Norwich.
There was a good entry of 27 in the boys’ event in which Ely was top seed.
They played in six initial groups, with Ely easily winning his, and Sean Lott from KES was second in his group.
The next round was split into four groups where the competition got harder, and although Lott did not progress any further, Ely won both games to reach the semi-finals.
He won 21-6, and in the final defeated Ben Sharman to take the title 21-12.
Ely and Lott then paired up in the boys’ doubles event.
Split into two groups, the pair easily won theirs to reach the semi-final where they had their hardest match against Sharman and Liam Bond, coming through by 21-15.
The final was surprisingly easier and they took the title, Ely’s second of the day, by 21-8.
Twelve girls from around the county entered the girls’ singles event.
Thirteen year-old Kathryn Baker from Springwood played well in a strong group which ended in a three-way tie.
All three girls won four out of five games, although it was Baker who progressed to the semi-final top of the group, by scoring more points than the others.
She had an easy semi-final, winning 21-6, but the final was just a step too far.
She battled hard but lost 21-16 to Lauren Mortimer.
Baker then paired up with Kayleigh Hellard in the doubles competition.
Hellard, who is from Stow Bridge, was playing her first- ever county tournament in Norwich.
The doubles were played in one group and the West Norfolk-based girls were runners- up, winning five matches and losing just one game by 21-12 to the eventual winners.
Baker and Ely played together for the first time in the mixed doubles event.
They were unfortunate in the initial group stage; although they won three games, they lost an extremely close deciding game 21-20, to go through as runners-up.
This meant that they played tougher opponents in the semi-final. They faced Sharman with on-form Mortimer (on course for a treble), and lost 21-15, denying Ely his own treble.
Lott and Hellard, also playing together for the first time, did very well to win one game in the group stage.
Following on from his county success, Ely entered a national bronze level event in Suffolk.
The event attracted a large boys entry of 42 in the singles.
Ely won his initial group, then won three elimination round matches to reach the final where he defeated Ryan Newcombe from Suffolk by 21-13 to win the event.
This success means he will be upgraded nationally to a grade two silver level player.
