Sport - Boxing: Joe, 12, through to national semi-finals

HOT propsect Joe Manning, 12, is just one step away from making the finals of the Schoolboy ABA National Championships.

On Sunday, the Ferry Street youngster will meet Liam Lyton, from London and the Home Counties, at Feltham, in Middlesex, with the winner going through to the finals. The Swaffham Hamond High School pupil defeated Weymouth’s Saul Randle, from the Western Counties, in the last eight at the weekend.

The judges found it difficult to split the pair after the opening two rounds.

Manning held a slender 6-5 advantage going into the third – but a brilliant display from Manning in the last clinched victory 11-6.

Ferry Street coach Mel Payne said: “I thought Joe was well ahead going into the last round.

“But he made sure of it with a fine display of boxing.”
