Sport - Boxing: Joe flies the Norfolk flag

HOT prospect Joe Manning faces a long trip to Bristol tomorrow for his quarter-final bout in the Schoolboy ABA national championships.

The 12-year-old from Lynn’s Ferry Street club, a student at Swaffham Hamond’s High School, is in the Class 1 under 42 kilos section and will be facing Saul Landle of Weymouth, the Western Counties champion.

Manning has claimed the Norfolk and Eastern Counties League titles and last Saturday overcame the Southern Counties winner Harry Cracknell, from Woking, in the pre-quarter finals held at Billericay.

Ferry Street head coach Mel Payne said: “Joe is now the only Norfolk boy left in the championships.

“He is a very good prospect and certainly one of the best young boxers we have had in a long time.”

If he gets through to the semi-finals, Manning would face the winner of the Home Counties-London section.
