Reserves commit a smash-and-grab

RIDGEONS LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

Lynn Reserves 1

Haverhill Rovers 0

CHARLIE Defty stole three points for lucky Lynn Reserves from relegation rivals Haverhill Rovers.

In a first half of very few chances, it wasn’t until the second minute of stoppage time when the deadlock was broken by Defty, who glanced home Kyle Nicholls’ free-kick with his head.

Lynn had to deal with a Haverhill onslaught in the second half and were indebted to the woodwork on two occasions.

Gary Bush went closest in the early stages of the first half as his rasping drive was pushed over by visiting custodian Ed Campbell, while at the other end Rovers’ Ryan Kent put a free header wide from eight yards.

Defty beat a crowd of players to the ball and give the home side the lead on half-time.

But the visitors responded with a one-on-one effort from striker Martin Westcott.

Shaun Banham was foiled by a goal-saving challenge by Stephen Harvey.

Sam Holmes hit the post from two yards for Haverhill and Lynn survived a massive penalty shout for handball on the line.

McAnally denied Banham again with four minutes left, but there was nothing he could do with Luke Hughes’ header in the fifth minute of injury time.

However, the Haverhill defender saw his effort crash against the crossbar and Lynn Reserves held on to three precious points.

l Lynn Reserves travel to Needham Market tonight.
