On verge of promotion

Swaffham could secure promotion from Eastern Counties Two this weekend – without even kicking a ball in anger.

After hitting Norwich Medics hit for six in their latest outing, Swaffham, who next host Mistley on March 2, know that promotion will be secured if Norwich Union fail to win their game.

Swaffham’s squad remained largely unchanged with Will Cornwell starting in the front row as the only amendment to the starting XV which won the previous week.

They laid the foundations for a 40-12 victory by opening the scoring on 12 minutes when a break from Rob Impey allowed Swaffham to close in on the Medics line.

Despite slow ball at the resulting breakdown, Daniel Spencer saw space in behind the defensive line and chipped over the top for Joe Milligan to collect and score.

Matty Taylor picked at the back of a ruck in the Medics line and sneaked over for a second try. Medics then hit back strongly before the hosts restored their lead through Daniel Bird.

The bonus point was secured just before half-time with the try of the match when another barnstorming run from Bird was supported by Adam Potter and finished off by Daniel Barnard to give Swaffham a 26-5 lead.

Medics scored the first points of the second half, but Swaffham continued to dominate the game.

The fifth try came from a Ryan Bigland off-load at the scrum to Stig Terzza before the impressive Potter crashed over to complete the scoring.

MoM: Matty Taylor.
