Rugby: Thirds lose out to league leaders

West Norfolk 3rds 15 Fakenham 1st 22

WEST Norfolk thirds felt hard done by in an unlucky defeat at the hands of league leaders Fakenham.

West, whose team included six different nationalities, started brightly with Jamie Shore’s well-positioned high kick off that was charged down by the back row of Davis, Nimmo and Courtenay, who settled Fakenham’s receiver just inside his own 22.

West were unlucky not to produce a try and the ball was scrambled to safety by the visitors.

From the following line-out West played good, quick ball and after Will Hopkins jinked past two players out wide he slipped the ball into Al Beard, who went over to put the hosts into the lead. Tom Calow failed to convert.

Fakenham scored off the back of an uncontested try, due to the departure of Martin Elsegood. The conversion was missed and the teams went in level at half time.

West made numerous changes at the break and substitute Ernesta was penalised for a high tackle, which Fakenham played quickly catching West off guard scoring close to the posts to take the lead.

After a potential knock-on, which wasn’t given on the Fakenham defensive line, the visitors cleared the ball deep into West territory.

West were appealing to the referee and did not respond quickly enough and the Fakenham winger collected the ball and scored in the corner.

With 15 minutes remaining, West were the dominant force and pulled the game back to within just one score when Tom Courtenay broke through two tired defenders to score in the corner.

The conversion was missed.

Another contentious knock-on appeal was turned down by the referee and West were punished once again for switching off as Fakenham collected the ball and ran in a converted try to put the game out of sight.

Despite the final score, West can take great heart from their display.
