Sport - Rugby: West suffer at hands of high-flers

West Norfolk 0

Ipswich YM 27

West suffered an Eastern Counties One home defeat at the hands of high-flying Ipswich YM.

With club captain Paul Denton injured, Michael Skinner led the squad, determined to make sure West put some steel into their performance against a larger set of opponents.

West started off brightly but a few basic mistakes enabled Ipswich to counter and score after five minutes.

Ipswich extended their lead to 12-0 with another well-worked move following a moment of poor tackling resulting in their second try.

West looked to regroup as their forwards were dominating the scrums and creating some good catch and drives from Dan Stephenson and Christian May at the line out.

Although West were looking threatening, another silly infringement at the ruck gave Ipswich an attempt at the posts, which they duly converted to take a 15-0 lead at the interval.

The hosts began the second half in confident mood as fly-half Ollie Denton attempted to work the ball back up the field, with the centre pairing of Dave Evans and Sam Corlett taking several crash balls.

But some stout defending from Ipswich kept West at bay.

West’s Paul Bridges was sin-binned for a professional foul and Ipswich took advantage with two further tries to end the match as 27-0 victors.

Despite this defeat, much credit should go to these up-and-coming players, such as debutant Craig Blackmur, who fought hard throughout.

Tulip MoM: Christian May.
