Sport - Rugby: Davis treble not enough for thirds

Lowestoft and Yarmouth 26 West Norfolk 26

WEST endured a tough challenge against Lowestoft as the team took a share of the spoils at the final whistle thanks to a treble of tries from Davis.

West took play into the Lowestoft 22 following a fine kick from a scrum turn over by Netherlands.

After some quick recycling Stephenson cleared out several men and Davis scooped up the loose ball and drove over several players to score. Netherlands converted.

West lost concentration and allowed the home side to score a try.

West reacted with a further score from Davis after crunching tackles from Large and Courtenay.

One of Lowestoft’s speedy backs then broke free to take the teams in even at the break.

In the second-half West opened the scoring with Courtenay driving through soft defence which, although converted by Netherlands, was not recorded by the referee unfortunately denying West what would have been a fine away win.

The hosts then looked like they had stolen victory when one of their players attached himself to the back of a West drive.

Instead of the referee blowing for offside, he allowed the player to break off and get over the line.

West roared back into action, a fine break by Courtenay senior and junior led to West securing good ball in the Lowestoft half. Again it was Hind who fed Davis and he cantered over for his hat-trick of tries which was duly converted by Netherlands.

In the dying minutes of the game West managed to force a penalty in a good field position in the home team’s half.

However, with victory almost certain if the kick had been successful, Netherlands kicked wide and the game finished even.

Tulip Men-of-the-Match: Tom Courtenay, Nathan Elsegood and Kyle Hind.
