West Norfolk Vets 27

Fakenham 21

WEST Norfolk avenged two narrow defeats earlier in the season to Fakenham by coming out victors with a commanding performance.

The back row of Cookie, Nimmo and Julian Davis thwarted any Fakenham attempts to remove themselves from inside their own half. With the front-row of Moore, Turner and Bob ever present in support, Fakenham became sloppy and errors occurred.

West were awarded a scrum inside the Fakenham 22 and with the ball hooked, Nimmo collected on the blind side and charged for the line, being tackled 5 yards out before off-loading to Julian who crossed for the first try. Al Beard converted.

West did not relent and Fakenham again found themselves in disarray and it was not long before Julian collected the ball from Brodowski and crashed over under the posts for the host’s second try. Al Beard again converted giving West a 14-0 lead.

With Fakenham only having 14 players Clift volunteered to join them and duly scored the visitor’s first try under the posts.

Fakenham were then awarded two penalties which were kicked bringing the half time score to 14-13.

Substitute Reggie made a big impact as the main crash ball man. Brodowski collected the off load and sailed over for West’s third try in the corner. Beard failed to convert.

With West having the majority of attacking possession and the upper hand in the scrums and line-outs it was inevitable that a try was on the cards and Simon Cooke was rewarded with a fine individual try in the corner. Beard missed the conversion. 27-13.

Fakenham kicked a penalty and then scored a well-deserved try to pull the score back to a more respectable 27-21.

A very good performance from West and a great win against a good Fakenham team.

West Norfolk 5 Diss 10

WEST were just edged out in an entertaining game against Diss.

A strong Diss pack were able to pin the hosts back in their own half and they scored within the first moments of the game as they spun the ball out wide to take an early 5-0 lead.

With scrums just about even, West attempted to hit back with a series of well executed line-out catch and drives from Edris and Marchant as they sought to gain some territory advantage.

As the half progressed West began to exert some pressure of their own, thanks to some powerful running from the front row of Bridges, Savage and Skinner.

However, just as West were starting to look like they may cross the line, Diss broke free and touched down in the left corner to take a 10-0 lead into the second half.

With Diss giving a number of penalties away at the break downs, West were able to push the visitors back within their own half.

From this West once again managed to pick and drive at the line-outs. Both Harris and Skinner came close to burrowing over from an ensuing ruck, but were stopped just short.

Bridges was on hand to receive the ball and power his way through to close the gap to 10-5.

At this point West almost broke through on a few occasions, with a sublime run from Chilvers down the left touch-line bursting through several tackles, only to be stopped inches short of the line.

Despite the end result, West should take many positives from this display and much heart from the newly blooded players, all of whom are progressing well within the squad.

Tomorrow West host Broadland in the league.

Tulip Man-of-the-Match: Paul Bridges.
