Sport - Rugby: West victorious in derby clash
Ely 13 West Norfolk 36
WEST ran out victors in a tough encounter against an Ely side that could have leap-frogged them in the league standings had they won.
A neat break that saw the ball passing through several hands of both forwards and backs, saw Maule slice through to score on the left side.
With the conversion added, West were 7-0 up in as many minutes.
This was shortly followed by another well-timed chip-and-chase by Maule, who released outside centre C Edwards.
The ball found Smith on the wing, who touched down in the left corner for West’s second.
Ely had some reprieve as they converted a penalty to bring the gap back to 12-3.
Then a solid run from a close range scrum eventually resulted in a third try as second-rower Marchant powered over, extending West’s lead to 17-3.
Maule was unlucky as his conversion attempt rebounded off the posts.
No. 8 Fysh, making his first start for the senior squad, was putting in a dominant performance and he made a break opening up the home defence to allow C. Edwards to go over in the corner.
Maule was unfortunate as his conversion attempt narrowly missed.
C. Edwards then went over for his second try of the match. Maule added the conversion to make it 29-3 to the visitors at the break.
For the first time in the match West started to look vulnerable as they gave away a series of further penalties within their own half.
The Ely fly-half opted to go for the posts and duly doubled their score to make it 29-6.
The home side were then rewarded for some spirited attacking play as they crashed over for a converted try.
Ely continued to press hard but some crunching tackles from inside centre Evans gave West an opportunity to turn the ball over.
Scrum half AJ Edwards picked up and powered over to score West’s sixth try after a jinxing run from Maule was stopped short.
Maule adding the extra points to extend the visitors lead to 36-13.
As the game took its toll on the players the action decreased and West held on for a 36-13 win.
Tomorrow, West host Diss in a friendly at Gatehouse Lane.
Tulip man-of-the-match: Charlie Fysh.
