West fall just short with loss at Harwich

Harwich & Dovercourt 15 West Norfolk 12

West fell just short of an away win in very hard-fought game on Saturday, against a well-organised and powerful Harwich side.

Despite losing the toss and being made to face some blustery conditions in the first half, West were in confident mood.

The squad was slightly changed due to some unavailabilities with the sprightly Chin Newton-Walters at hooker, Dave Evans at scrum-half and Ryan Walker making a deserved start in the back row following a good showing the previous week.

Harwich began the match on the front foot and West were caught infringing at the breakdown, giving the hosts a couple of opportunities to kick for goal, of which one was converted to give them an early 3-0 lead.

As West sought to work their way into an attacking position, Harwich then capitalised on some sluggish play by the visitors to run in a try and conversion, extending the score to 10-0 as the first quarter ticked by.

Undeterred, West hit back on 35 minutes with a flowing attack from a lineout near the Harwich 22.

The ball moved right to left, then recycled quickly and going through the hands to find prop Lawrence Savage bursting through with a hand-off, before scoring in the corner with a sublime pirouette in mid-tackle to make it 10-5 at the interval.

West came out fighting in the second half with some powering runs from the likes of Sam Corlett, Shaun Brundle and Ross Biggs.

Dan Stephenson was yellow-carded and Harwich counter-attacked.

A small lapse in West’s defence was all that was required as the hosts took advantage of an overlap to score in the left corner, making it 15-5.

West continued to press with some penetrating runs from Charlie Moore and Joe Butt, plus some great driving mauls from the forwards.

Nick Bull then crashed over and converted his own try, to put West within three points of their hosts.

Tomorrow, West host Thurston.

Tulip MoM: Nick Bull.
