Scout is Lynn's secret weapon

LINNETS boss Carl Heggs has revealed his secret weapon for next season – a new scout.

Heggs has called upon the services of Lee Sullivan as Lynn look to get a headstart on their UniBond rivals.

Sullivan, who has also worked with both Notts County and Nuneaton Borough, worked under Heggs at Redditch, and the Linnets boss had no hesitation in bringing him to The Walks.

Heggs said: "Lee played a massive part in Redditch staying up last season and finishing 13th in the Conference North on a budget of 1,000.

"He will go and watch every team before we play them and come back with a detailed report on our opposition.

"Lee will report back about the strengths and weaknesses of our opposition, their dangermen and shape, and we will work on whatever he tells us.

"We will prepare thoroughly like that for every match and if we end up losing the game it will be because we have been beaten by the better team, not because we haven't prepared properly.

"We've all got to contribute to make this club successful, from the chairman, to the players right down to the fans.

"We are all in this together as a club and if one person is pulling in the wrong direction you are only as strong as your weakest link."

The Linnets boss, who made more than 200 appearances during a ten-year Football League career, will also register himself as an emergency player for next season.

Heggs, along with assistant boss Andy Johnson, proved their playing credentials during Sky TV's indoor Midlands masters on Sunday.

The pair played in all three games for West Bromwich Albion and Heggs notched a last-minute winner against Wolves in the Black Country derby.

"If we are chasing a game in the last 20 minutes, then I'll bring myself on to bash a few people up,"said Heggs.

"I played 25 games for Redditch in the Conference North last season so I'd be foolish not to register myself as a player.

"I don't want to play, but if I have to, then I will."

Heggs yesterday lost out on the Telford-based left-back he was chasing.

"He would have been a good asset, a consistent seven out of ten player for us, but he was faced with a six-hour round-trip to play for us in a home game," said Heggs.

"I've still got two other irons in the fire in that position."

Once he has signed a left-back and completed the formalities of two loan deals with a Championship club, Heggs will run the rule over ten trialists in pre-season training.

"Once I've got a left-back and the two loan players in I will have a squad of about 13 or 14, including myself," said Heggs.

"I will then be looking to perhaps sign a couple of trialists to give us 14 or 15 players.

"We haven't got the money to go out and get a squad of 18 or 19 players. I’d rather have just 14 or 15 here who can all do me a job.”

Striker Jack Defty, who wasn’t part of Heggs’ plans, severed his long-association with the club earlier in the week when he joined a clutch of former Linnets players by signing for Corby Town.

Lynn will begin pre-season training on Thursday, July 2, and this week The Walks outfit confirmed a number of their friendlies.

Conference National side Kettering will be the visitors to The Walks on Tuesday, July 14, with three additional home fixtures pencilled in against league opposition.

Lynn will conclude their pre-season programme with trips to Brackley on Tuesday, August 4, and Halesowen four days later.

“Our last two pre-season games will be against sides in the equivalent of our league, albeit the southern section,” said Heggs.

“They will be two really good tests for us and it will give me a really good idea of what will be required to win the UniBond Premier.

“You want to win every game you play in, but pre-season is about getting the players fit and ready for that first league fixture on August 15.

“You have to look after the players like children and nurture them through pre-season. If I lose somebody like Gareth Sheldon with a groin strain a week or two before the start of the season, where will that leave us?”

l The steering group behind the formation of a Supporters Trust at Lynn FC yesterday released the following statement.

“You are invited to join us at the Blue and Gold on Thursday, June 25, at 7.30pm to form the working party and its sub groups that will take the Supporters Trust through to its launch in September then onto its first AGM.

“We are looking for help in forming groups that will deal with the constitution, membership, community, website, media, fundraising and finance.

“Please come forward and help us take the Supporters Trust forward. Achieve more together.”
