So far, so good as Stars bring down Rockets
PREMIER TROPHY Lynn Stars 58 Rye House 35
SO far, so good.
That was the view of team manager Rob Lyon after watching his Lynn Stars riders demolish Rye House at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday.
The Rockets arrived in town as the early pacesetters in the Premier Trophy table, but have never really shown a liking for the Lynn track and once again had too many weak links to offer a genuine threat.
Lyon commented: "It was a good solid performance and you cannot argue with a 23-point win. There are a few things we've got to work on, with some of the boys still settling in, but that takes time and this is only our second home meeting.
"We were really strong at reserve even though Darcy Ward wasn't feeling too good because of a virus."
Ward and his reserve partner Jan Graversen were paid for no less than 23 points – and in the opposite corner Luke Bowen and veteran Andrew Silver got just one point between them.
That scoring, plus a blistering start from the Stars, meant Rye House were always chasing the match, although their young English riders Joe Haines and Robert Mear featured in the best races of the night and made sure it wasn't a complete walk-over.
Lyon, in his capacity as England team manager, will have noted them as two riders for the future.
Haines made a brilliant start in Heat 5 to pull away from Chris Schramm and his winning time of 59.90 was the best of the night.
That dented Lynn's excellent start and two races later it was Mear's turn, this time with a double-scoring tactical ride when he kept Emiliano Sanchez at bay for a six-pointer.
But either side of the interval the Stars pulled away again, with skipper Tomas Topinka making it a hat-trick of wins at the top of the order.
The last throw of the dice for Rye House was in giving Haines a tactical ride in Heat 11, as partner to Mear, but Haines was pushed wide on the first and second turns by Sanchez and was kept at the back for zero points.
The best action for the fans came in Heat 14, when Schramm and Mear battled it out at the front with the Lynn man finding grip wide out to sweep through for victory.
And Lynn finished just as they had started, with a 5-1 result, this time Topinka and Schramm at the front.
Lynn Stars: Tomas Topinka 13+1 (5 rides), Kozza Smith – rider replacement, Christian Henry 5+3 (4 rides), Chris Schramm 13+1 (5 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 9 (5 rides), Jan Graversen 8+2 (6 rides), Darcy Ward 10+3 (5 rides).
Rye House: Chris Neath – rider replacement, Joe Haines 10 (6 rides), Linus Sundstrom 7 (5 rides), Robert Mear 13 (6 rides), Tommy Allen 4 (5 rides), Andrew Silver 0 (4 rides), Luke Bowen 1 (4 rides).
The Stars face a quick Trophy return with Rye House when they travel to meet the Rockets at Hoddesdon tomorrow night.
