Sport - Speedway: Iversen will spearhead Stars’ 2013 challenge

The news all Lynn Speedway fans wanted was confirmed this week when negotiations with Niels-Kristian Iversen were successfully concluded.

Fans’ favourite Iversen will be back for a third year at the Norfolk Arena after a hugely-successful 2012 in which he increased his already-impressive average up to 8.84.

Iversen signing on the dotted line now completes the Roger Warnes Transport Stars’ team for the 2013 Elite League season.

The 30-year-old, who won a starting place in the 2013 Speedway Grand Prix line-up, was top of Lynn’s wanted list.

On returning to ride for the Stars, a delighted Iversen said: “Peterborough was never an option for me due to the race nights, and I was either going to return to Lynn or not ride in Great Britain at all.

“I am so glad to be back as it’s a great club with great people.”

Iversen believes that the Stars can be in the mix for honours this season.

“I believe we have a strong team this season that can challenge for honours,” said Iversen.

“I can’t wait to get started, especially with our first two matches being home and away against Peterborough on the same day.”

Stars promoter Buster Chapman is pleased to have finally tied up the deal with his number one target.

Chapman said: “It’s great news for the club. Niels is a world class rider, our fans love him and he clearly loves being with the Stars. Obviously it could have been sorted sooner, but thankfully it is sorted now.

“I believe that not only our club but the whole sport will benefit from his presence in the Elite League this year.”

Lynn will get their Elite League campaign underway with a mouth-watering doubleheader against Peterborough Panthers – who were at the centre of the Iversen controversy – on March 29.

The first leg will take place at the East of England Showground at 2pm, with the return meeting at the Norfolk Arena, starting at 7pm.

Lynn Stars’ 2013 Elite League team (42.28 points): Niels-Kristian Iversen 8.84, Rory Schlein 7.33, Mads Korneliussen 6.70, Simon Stead 5.75, Nicolai Klindt 5.68, Sebastian Alden 4.55 and Kozza Smith 3.43.

Iversen will next be seen in Stars’ colours at the club’s opening meeting of the campaign – the Tomas Topinka farewell meeting on Friday, March 8.
