Stars power on with trophy bid
PREMIER TROPHY: Lynn Stars 69 Stoke 21
Match points: Lynn 3 Stoke 0
THIS was another powerhouse performance from Lynn Stars on Wednesday, racing to their biggest win yet in the Premier Trophy.
And the result confirms the team's place in the semi-finals of the competition with three matches to go, leading the southern section by eight points.
Stoke, who pipped Lynn by six points on their home track a month ago, offered little resistance and conceded no fewer than ten 5-1 heat scores.
Lynn team manager Rob Lyon summed it up: "Stoke were poor tonight, no question, and their team manager came over to me and apologised for such an inept performance."
Lyon added: "We were very solid tonight all the way through and it gives the boys confidence for the match at Birmingham on Sunday.
"We know we are through now, we can relax, enjoy it and try and get another win away from home."
The scorechart shows that the Lynn riders scored in every single race and they also had three maximum men in Chris Schramm, Emiliano Sanchez and Darcy Ward.
Tomas Topinka, the skipper, missed out having dropped a point in his opening ride.
That was the first race of the night when Stoke's Lee Complin and Tom P Madsen were on a 5-1 until Madsen's bike slowed down at the end of the third lap.
After that Stoke never looked like providing another race winner as they were often pinned at the back by excellent team riding from the Stars.
Lynn Stars: Tomas Topinka 9+2 (4 rides), Kozza Smith – rider replacement, Christian Henry 8+3 (5 rides), Chris Schramm 12 (4 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 9+3 (4 rides), Jan Graversen 9+1 (4 rides), Darcy Ward 14+1 (5 rides), Darren Mallett 8+1 (4 rides).
Stoke: Lee Complin 8 (5 rides), Tom P. Madsen 1 (5 rides), Glenn Phillips 0 (4 rides), Jason Bunyan 7 (5 rides), Phil Morris – rider replacement, Jesper Kristiansen 4 (6 rides), Claus Jakobsen 1 (5 rides).
Somerset 46 Lynn 44
Match points: Somerset 2 Lynn 1
UNLUCKY Lynn Stars were pipped at the post in this Sky Sports televised thriller on Tuesday.
It all went down to a last heat decider, with Somerset pulling out a 5-1 to clinch victory.
The Stars just needed to share the points in the race to win this Premier League fixture and there was high drama as it was twice stopped on the first turn after skipper Tomas Topinka fell when forced wide by the home side's Steve Johnston.
In the third start Topinka's bike packed up which left maximum man Johnston and partner Cory Gathercole to see off Chris Schramm's challenge for the match-winning 5-1.
Earlier, teenager Darcy Ward was again in brilliant form for the Stars with his score of paid 18 from seven starts, which included three wins.
But Lynn's hopes of building a lead were hit when Schramm missed out on points with a fall in Heat 7 and an engine failure in Heat 10.Jan Graversen at reserve also had problems with a tapes offence in the second race.
Somerset: Steve Johnston 15 (5 rides), Simon Walker – rider replacement, Justin Sedgeman 2 (5 rides), Emil Kramer 8 (4 rides), Cory Gathercole 14+2 6 rides), Jay Herne 5 (5 rides), Tom Brown 2+1 (4 rides).
Lynn: Tomas Topinka 9 (5 rides), Kozza Smith – rider replacement, Christian Henry 5+1 (4 rides), Chris Schramm 5+1 (5 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 7+2 (5 rides), Jan Graversen 2+1 (4 rides), Darcy Ward 16+2 (7 rides).
