Stars' semi-final spot beckons

PREMIER TROPHY Lynn Stars 62 Somerset 32

A PLACE in the Premier Trophy semi-finals is already beckoning for Lynn Stars – with half their fixtures still to come.

This latest big win at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday was worth three more points and put the Stars back on top of the Southern Section table.

A total of 42 points came from the in-form trio of skipper Tomas Topinka and Chris Schramm (pictured right)– who both finished with paid maximums – and lively reserve Darcy Ward, who suffered just one defeat.

Somerset didn't have the riders to compete against that firepower, although the scoreline perhaps doesn't reflect how hard they made Lynn work for the points.

Lynn raced into a 28-10 lead after just six heats, the best action early on coming in Heat 5 when the quick-gating Schramm stayed in front of visiting skipper Steve Johnston, who was on a double-scoring tactical ride.

Going into Heat 8, Lynn had Topinka, Schramm, Emiliano Sanchez and Ward all unbeaten by a Somerset rider. Ward, however, came unstuck in that race suffering a rare defeat at home when he couldn't make up ground on fellow-Aussie Justin Sedgmen who had made an excellent start.

The maximum hopes of Sanchez ended just after the interval with a couple of third places before his engine ground to an expensive halt in Heat 13.

That left Schramm and Topinka to finish off the job, which they did in style in Heat 15 with a 5-1.

Team manager Rob Lyon, pleased with another convincing win, said: "We've got a week's break now, but we need to keep things rolling when we come back. At this stage I think if we can win our remaining home matches and take maximum points from them that could well be enough to reach the semi-finals.

"But we do want to keep picking up points away as well. That's good for morale, good for the team and good for the riders' pay packets."

Lynn Stars: Tomas Topinka 14+1 (5 rides), Kozza Smith – rider replacement, Christian Henry 6+2 (4 rides), Chris Schramm 14+1 (5 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 7+1 (5 rides), Jan Graversen 4+1 (4 rides), Darcy Ward 14 (5 rides), Darren Mallett 3 (2 rides).

Somerset: Steve Johnston 8 (5 rides), Justin Sedgmen 6 (5 rides), Simon Walker 3+1 (4 rides), Emil Kramer 8 (4 rides), Cory Gathercole 5+1 (4 rides), Tom Brown 0 (4 rides), Jay Herne 2 (4 rides).

The Lynn Barracudas are at home tomorrow night with their first official National League fixture of 2009, taking on the Scunthorpe Saints at the Norfolk Arena (7.30pm).
