Stars silence Bandits to storm into semis

PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP

Berwick 26 Lynn Stars 57

Lynn win 115-58 on aggregate

BERWICK fans were silenced as Lynn Stars stormed to an emphatic KO Cup quarter-final win on Saturday.

The Stars, with a 26-point advantage from the first leg at the Norfolk Arena last month, virtually made sure of progress into the semi-finals when racing into a 19-5 lead in the opening five races.

Heavy rain threatened to disrupt proceedings after six races before conditions improved sufficiently for the meeting to continue – although it was stopped after Heat 14 because the Berwick circuit's time curfew had been reached.

The victory was all the more impressive as the Roger Warnes Transport Stars were without key riders Darcy Ward, Linus Eklof (both in the World U21 semi-finals) and skipper Tomas Topinka who was injured.

But guest riders David Howe and Rusty Harrison both scored well, while Emiliano Sanchez scorched to a paid maximum from his five rides.

Lynn's aggregate win is a new club KO Cup record, superceding the 46-point overall win set by the triple-winning team of 2006, which coincidently also came against Berwick.

Berwick: Michael Makovsky 9 (4 rides), William Lawson 1 (4 rides), Paul Clews 3 (4 rides), Josef Franc 8 (4 rides), Gino Franchetti 2 (4 rides), Greg Blair 0 (3 rides), Nick Simmons 3 (5 rides).

Lynn Stars: David Howe 13 (5 rides), Rusty Harrison 7+2 (5 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 14+1 (5 rides), Chris Schramm 11+1 (5 rides), Tomas Topinka – rider replacement, Kozza Smith 4+2 (4 rides), Jan Graversen 9+2 (4 rides).

Sheffield 50 Lynn Stars 40

Match points: Sheffield 3 Lynn 0

AN ankle injury kept skipper Tomas Topinka out of this Premier League fixture at Sheffield on Thursday – and in his absence the Stars failed to pick up at least a point for the first time this season.

Lynn took the honours in the early stages, holding a six-point lead after nine races, thanks to a sequence of wins from Darcy Ward, Emiliano Sanchez and Kozza Smith.

But Sheffield turned it round with a strong finish by taking the next five races before Ward won a thrilling Heat 15.

The Stars used rider-replacement for Topinka, but that only secured four points.

Sheffield: Ricky Ashworth 13 (5 rides), Hugh Skidmore 7+3 (4 rides), Chris Mills 5+2 (4 rides), Richard Hall 9+1 (5 rides), Josh Auty 5+2 (4 rides), Joel Parsons 4+1 (4 rides), Paul Cooper 7+1 5 rides).

Lynn: Darcy Ward 14 (6 rides), Linus Eklof 5+1 (5 rides), Chris Schramm 4+1 (5 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 8 (6 rides), Tomas Topinka – rider replacement, Kozza Smith 9 (5 rides), Jan Graversen 0 (3 rides).

Match points:

Plymouth 3 Lynn 0

LYNN salvaged some pride after struggling to get to grips on the tight Plymouth track on Friday.

Plymouth raced into a 25-5 lead in just five races, but then the Barracudas fought back well and gave the strong West Country side a run for their money. Adam Allott and Darren Mallett both picked up a couple of race wins, but guest man Byron Becker – in for Jamie Smith – had a succession of falls.

Teenage reserve Rhys Naylor crashed out in his first ride when his chain came off and was withdrawn from the meeting.

Plymouth: Mark Simmonds 9 (4 rides), David Gough 2+1 (1 ride), Kyle Hughes 12+15 rides), Paul Starke 8+2 (5 rides), Seemond Stephens 9 (4 rides), Josh Dingle 6+4 (5 rides), Matt Bates 11+2 (6 rides).

Barracudas: Byron Bekker 2+1 (4 rides), Chris Widman 3 (4 rides), Scott Campos 2+1 (4 rides), Adam Allott 13 (5 rides), Darren Mallett 12 (5 rides), Rhys Naylor 0 (1 ride), Adam Lowe 5 (7 rides).
