TULIPS: Anelka heads new captures for Posh clash

Spalding United v Peterborough United XI (tonight, 7.45pm)

A HOST of new faces could make their Tulips debuts as they kick-off their pre-season schedule with a prestigious friendly against Posh.

A prolific striker called Anelka leads the list of new captures, while former favourite Gary Pawson has also agreed a return.

Marque capture Tony Anelka, who stands at 6ft 3ins tall, smashed in the goals at a lower level and snubbed the advances of Conference North side Stafford Rangers to pen a deal with Richard Scott's side.

Spalding player/boss Scott said: "Tony scored a lot of goals at a lower level last season and is determined to have a crack a bit higher up the ladder with us.

"I know Stafford Rangers were after him, but he has turned them down in favour of joining us because he knows my assistant manager.

"He is a very raw, very aggressive player who will give defenders nightmares. He is a bit like a young John Fashanu."

Fellow forward Daniel Westwood has also been snapped up from the Midlands area after spending last season with Halesowen Town.

Centre-back Pawson returns to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field from Louth and ex-Bourne Town goalkeeper Aaron Bellairs moves up a level after a fine season for Yaxley.

They could all be in the line-up for tonight's exciting clash, although Scott expects Posh to bring a youthful side.

The Spalding supremo has happy memories of playing for the League Two side, particularly in an Auto Windscreens Shield final, and admits that he is really looking forward to meeting them from the other side of the fence.

"It's going to be a great evening and I am really looking forward to the occasion," said Scott, who made nearly a century of appearances for Posh.

"So too are my players. Everyone wants to take part and I could end up fielding two completely different teams."

Admission is 6 for adults and 4 for senior citizens, while the club are offering a "Kids for a Quid" promotion.

Any children wanting to take advantage of this offer can download a special ticket from the Tulips' new website www.spaldingunited.co.uk.

Spalding also host newly-formed King's Lynn FC at the Sir Halley Stewart Field on Saturday (3pm).

Behind the scenes, chairman Chris Toynton is confident that two local businessmen will be joining the club very shortly as non-executive directors.

The Tulips will host Goole AFC in the FA Cup on Saturday, August 28 (3pm).
