TULIPS: Scott delighted as Spalding shock Posh

SPALDING UNITED 2 (Anelka 46, Webb 86) PETERBOROUGH UNITED XI 1 (Newell 77)

RICHARD Scott was delighted by the showing of his new-look Spalding side as they took a major scalp in their first pre-season outing.

Debutant Tony Anelka and midfielder Mark Webb struck either side of a disputed penalty to earn the Tulips a shock win over Posh on Tuesday night.

The npower League One side fielded a youthful team of second year scholars, but Scott insists that any kind of win over the city side is not to be sniffed at.

He said: "The household names weren't there but these are young guys looking to forge a career in the game.

"There were a number of great performances from my side and it was nice to see them looking fit and positive. All in all it's a really positive start to the season."

The Spalding player/boss, who was excellent in defence, also revealed that a number of the squad have already put pen to paper with the club.

Goalscorer Anelka, ex-Boston United keeper Martyn Margarson, striker Dan Westwood and midfielder Luke Hipwell - who is involved with the Tulips' academy - have all committed themselves to the club.

Of last years' survivors, Scott expects David de Oliveira, Pete Smith and Luke Forbes to follow the lead of George Cox and Matty Evans in re-signing.

Left back Leon Pugh, who caught the eye in the first period, has indicated that he would like to stay, while Scott was encouraged by the showings of striker Ian Dunn and defender Anthony Lewis.

"Most of the lads there last night are keen to be involved," added the Spalding supremo.

"It'll be a similar squad this weekend and some players will be given a bit more playing time."

The Tulips were a breath of fresh air in the goalless first period, with the long-suffering faithful struggling to believe their eyes.

Ex-Holbeach United and Bourne Town striker Dunn went close on two occasions early on, before being forced off with a eye injury which required hospital treatment.

His replacement Anelka was a real handful all night. Tall and pacey, he forced the Posh keeper into a cracking save before opening the scoring just after the break with a neat finish.

The visitors briefly levelled from the spot after Scott was harshly penalised in the box, although Leigh Overton did save Joe Newell's initial effort.

Webb had the last word though, lashing home a stunning strike into the top left corner from well outside of the box.

Tulips: Margarson (Overton 46), Ruddock (Cox 46), Pugh (Forbes 46), Smith (Webb 46), Lewis (Penney 87), Scott, Hipwell (Yearwood 46), Forden (Whiteman 46), Dunn (Anelka 19) (Oliver 71), Sheridan (de Oliveira 46), White (Westwood 46).

Saturday: Tulips v King's Lynn Town (3pm).

THE Tulips will make the trip to Leek Town on the opening day of the Evo-stik League First Division South season (August 21).

Rivals Grantham Town are the first visitors to the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field three days later, while the first clash with Stamford is on September 28 at the Vic Couzens Stadium.
