Since winning their first race at national level back in April, Downham’s duo of Elliot and Scott Ryan have had little track time having suffered a blown engine in the first round (of the senior championship) and a cancelled second round due to poor track conditions.
With the purchase of two new engines from Belgium for the #23 Zabel powered outfit, the siblings travelled to Wattisfield Hall in Suffolk for the third round of the Maxxis British Sidecarcross Championship.
Qualifying went well with a position of 15th out of some 40 outfits, on a wet but rapidly drying track. The choice of an outside gate gave the brothers a good position into the first bend in all three races. Race 1 saw a finish of 14th with spirited battles. Race 2 culminated in 13th after a slipping clutch had a caused a poor start. The brothers reached 12th spot at one point.
Elliot stated that there was no let up on this technical track: “There was no respite due to so many twists and turns and a total lack of a long straight!”
Both brothers looked visibly fatigued before the third race. So a plot was hatched to ride consistently, and 19th was the final position, achieving 15th overall for a satisfactory outing. Next round: June 26, Milton Park, near Northampton.
