Whizz-kid Ward secures a bonus point

PREMIER TROPHY

Stoke 48 Lynn Stars 42

LYNN Stars picked up a bonus point in this narrow Premier Trophy defeat at Stoke on Saturday.

In this year's new Premier League rules, an away team losing by between one and six points earns a point – and that's what the Stars achieved thanks to an outstanding performance by whizz-kid Darcy Ward at reserve.

The Australian Under-21 champion, on his first-ever visit to the track, had a 14+1 return from seven starts, notching up three race wins in the process.

On a slippery track, Stoke eased into an eight-point lead after seven races, but Lynn responded and won the next three to make it 30-30.

Heat 11 proved decisive for the Potters as they scored a surprise 5-1 when Phil Morris and Jesper Kristiansen out-gated Tomas Topinka and Ward, who could make no impression on the home pairing.

But in the closing stages Lynn did just enough to hold on to that bonus point, Ward winning Heat 14 and Topinka splitting the home pairing in the final race.

Stoke: Lee Complin 5+2 (4 rides), Glen Phillips 7 (4 rides), Tom Madsen 3 (3 rides), Jason Bunyan 9 (5 rides), Jesper Kristiansen 8+3 (5 rides), Klaus Jakobsen 3 (4 rides).

Lynn Stars: Tomas Topinka 9+1 (5 rides), Kozza Smith rider replacement, Christian Henry 7+2 (5 rides), Chris Schramm 3 (4 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 6+1 (5 rides), Jan Graversen 3 (4 rides), Darcy Ward 14+1 (7 rides).
