SPEEDWAY: Lynn Stars team manager Rob Lyon has identified tonight's trip to Scunthorpe (7.30pm) as a key meeting for their title aspirations.

The Lynn Money Centre Stars have their first Premier League "derby" – well, only Mildenhall is closer – at Scunthorpe (7.30pm).

The Scorpions so far are the only team to beat leaders Somerset.

Lyon said: "It's one of the key matches I've pulled out as being one we need to win if we want to win the league.

"They're quite good on their own track, and they're a fairly solid outfit with nobody you could class as an out-and-out number one.

"I predict it'll be close, whichever way it goes," Lyon added.

He also said that the Eddie Wright Raceway should not hold any fears for his side: "Tomas Topinka's been there as a guest, Simon Lambert has probably ridden there more times than he has Lynn, while John Oliver and Rusty Harrison have been there at least once.

"It doesn't faze Kevin Doolan, who'd never ridden Birmingham before, but last week he got a 15-point maximum, while Shaun Tacey is experienced enough to cope."

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey says the standard of racing in the club's first Premier League season continues to get better and better.

Godfrey said: "If you want entertaining, come here because we haven't had a bad meeting all year.

"The crowds are increasing.

great racing

"Some people think speedway is first out the gate but here you are guaranteed great racing."

With both Monday's and Wednesday's meetings with Reading rained off, Lyon said: "We're desperate to ride as a team, as it's a shame the weather's intervened and beat us because we set ourselves a target for the week.

"If we don't ride, then (next week) it will be ten days before we've ridden as a team.

"We've had this situation last year and the year before that.

"It would be nice to come away with three points and put pressure on the teams around us, and give us confidence going into next week's top of the table Somerset meeting."

Lynn's riding order is unchanged, while Scunthorpe are set to use Elite Leaguer Henning Bager as a guest for Magnus Karlsson, who has returned to Sweden to be with his partner, who has suffered a miscarriage.

  • Hosts and favourites Workington will face Somerset, Sheffield and Edinburgh in their semi-final group, with Lynn, Newcastle, Berwick and Reading battling in the other group of the Premier League Four Team Championship Finals on Saturday, July 26.

Lynn will field Doolan, Topinka, Tacey and Harrison.
