Wednesday's speedway Under 16s challenge between Lynn and Rye House at the Norfolk Arena was the first proper meeting for Hilgay's Jake Knight (16), son of former Lynn club captain, Richard Knight.
Unsurprisingly with a father who has ridden for England and in a world final, Jake was brought up on the sport – Richard remembers him toddling around the garden in old speedway boots and jacket – but father and son then took a break from the sport after Jake got his first bike (motocross) around the age of 7.

Richard said: "It's only in the last two years that Jake has wanted to get back into it. He's wanted to be a full-time rider ever since.

"I'm there to give him as much help and guidance as he wants.

"I wasn't in that position at his age, my father wasn't around.

"All the lessons I've learned in my career – about diet, training – I can pass on.

"I feel he's got the natural ability to make it as a rider."

On their plans afterwards, Richard said: "Our aim is to get Jake into a Conference League outfit next year.

"He's a thinking rider rather than a flat out harum-scarum rider."
