ASHLEY Jones' Memorial Meeting.
Young Lions 37 Young Roos 53
HOT prospect Tai Woffinden gave a master class performance with a 15-point maximum in this special Ashley Jones Memorial meeting on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old Rye House rider won from the front and from the back as he showed why he is tipped for great things in the sport.
In his corner of the pits was former Lynn favourite Michael Lee, the 1980 World Champion, who was delighted with what he saw of his young protégé.
Woffinden's gating wasn't always the best, but in successive starts he came from the back to beat Eastbourne's Elite League riders Lewis Bridger and then James Brundle.
There was even better to come from Woffinden in an all-action Heat 15, when weaving his way from fourth to first and finding a way past the Young Lions pairing of Brundle and Simon Lambert.
In the early stages of this highly entertaining challenge, featuring many of the sport's bright young hopes, the honours were even, but the Roos pulled away after Eastbourne's Bridger damaged his shoulder in a Heat 6 crash and had to retire from the meeting.
Local boy Brundle, back on his "home" track, was always in the thick of things for the Lions, but the Roos were stronger all round and Kozza Smith superbly supported Woffinden with a double-figure score as he continued his recent run of good form.
"Kozza Smith and Simon Lambert, normally teammates, had a couple of really good races," said promoter Jonathan Chapman.
Young Lions: Lewis Bridger 2 (2 rides), Darren Rolph 2 (4 rides), James Brundle 14 (6 rides), Darren Mallett 2+1 (4 rides), Simon Lambert 7+1 (6 rides), Jerran Hart 6 (4 rides), Josh Graczonek 4+1 (4 rides).
Young Roos: Tai Woffinden 15 (5 rides), Ty Proctor 7+1 (4 rides), Kozza Smith 10 (5 rides), James Holder 6+1 (4 rides), John Oliver 7 (4 rides), Mitchell Davey 7+2 (6 rides), Arlo Bugeja 1 (2 rides).
- A surprise visitor at the Norfolk Arena was Trevor Harding, who had jetted into Heathrow from Australia just a few hours before the meeting.
Harding is out for the season after he fractured vertebra in his back in a racing accident in January.
He told fans he was making steady progress, but is still several months away before he can start training or consider his future.
Premier League The fourth-place Lynn Stars travel to seventh-place Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
Money Centre Stars promoter Jonathan Chapman said: "Kozza Smith has never ridden there, but everyone else has.
"Tom Topinka loves the place.
