TOMAS TOPINKA, the day before his 34th birthday, showed some of the sport's up-and-coming youngsters that he still knows the quickest way around the Norfolk Arena circuit.
The skipper of the Money Centre Stars led with a paid maximum as his side swept to a comprehensive victory on Wednesday over one of their Premier League play-off rivals.
And Topinka's winning time of 58.97 in Heat 5, when he scorched away from ex-Lynn favourite Daniel Nermark, was the fastest at the track this season.
Nermark was obviously the danger man, but he was firmly put in his place by firstly Kevin Doolan and then Topinka.
It wasn't until Heat 11 that the Swede managed his first win, a tactical ride six-pointer, when he just got the better of in-form Rusty Harrison.
By that time the Stars were so far ahead they couldn't be caught, but Doolan's hopes of a maximum were ended by Nermark in Heat 13.
For close action, Heat 14 was the pick of the meeting as the young guns really went for it. Joe Haines and Charles Wright, for Workington, soon picked off early race leader John Oliver, but then found themselves under pressure from Simon Lambert who did well to get up and split them on the line.
Haines, the talented 16-year-old Boston rider, was given a Heat 15 outing by the Comets, but it ended on the first bend when Nermark hit the deck and Haines couldn't avoid him.
The teenager was sent flying and received treatment for a suspected broken wrist.
In the re-start for this final race, Topinka and Doolan didn't give Nermark any openings and the sixth 5-1 of the night for the Stars was soon a formality.
