PREMIER LEAGUE

Lynn Stars 63 Scunthorpe 28
THIS victory pushed the Money Centre Stars from fourth place right up to the top of the Premier League, while giving their points difference a substantial boost as well.

And, despite the one-sided look to the scoreline, this was far more entertaining for the fans than the previous week's romp against Somerset.

In the table Lynn have moved level with Edinburgh on 29 points, but on race points are +276 to the Monarchs' +182; Workington are third on 28 and +68.

Tonight the Stars are on their travels again, away to close rivals Somerset who are fourth on 27 points and +250.

Team manager Rob Lyon summed up Wednesday's result: "That was another good win for us and it will give us confidence ahead of the fixture at Somerset.

"We've a good record at Somerset, so it would be nice to keep that going, although they have looked very strong at home.

"If we don't manage a victory, then I'm hoping we will at least keep it close and that would mean we stay top of the table with three of us all level on 29."

Scunthorpe, who scored a surprise win over the Stars on their own track last Friday, showed only glimpses of that form after starting off in the worst possible way by conceding a 5-0, when both Richard Hall and Carl Wilkinson fell in separate incidents.

The next two were shared, with Magnus Karlsson blasting away from the gate in Heat 3 and not making a mistake as he held off home skipper Tomas Topinka.

But then it all went wrong for the visitors who saw Karlsson trail in third when given a tactical ride in Heat 7; Hall didn't do much better in Heat 8, only managing second place in his double-score tactical substitute ride off 15m and unable to get by race leader Shaun Tacey.

When Lynn took 5-1 scores either side of the interval the score shot up to 44-17, but Scunthorpe showed a lot of fight in the closing stages.

Hall led the way by getting through off the final bend in Heat 11 to split Rusty Harrison and John Oliver.

Heat 14 was the pick of the meeting with all four riders covered by just a few yards for most of the race.

Viktor Bergstrom, after three zeroes, showed good track craft to get round Oliver, while Ben Powell held off Simon Lambert which gave Scunthorpe a 4-2 and their only heat advantage.

For the in-form Stars, Kevin Doolan's straight 15-point maximum was pure class, while Topinka only just missed out, as did Tacey.

Lynn: Kevin Doolan 15 (5 rides), Shaun Tacey 8+2 (4 rides), Tomas Topinka 13+1 (5 rides), Simon Lambert 5+3 (4 rides), Rusty Harrison 8+1 (4 rides), John Oliver 8+1 (4 rides), Kozza Smith 6+1 (4 rides).

Scunthorpe: Richard Hall 9 (6 rides), Carl Wilkinson 0 (3 rides), Magnus Karlsson 5 (4 rides), Viktor Bergstrom 3 (4 rides), Emiliano Sanchez 6+1 (5 rides), Ben Powell 4, Darren Mallett 1+1 (3 rides).
