A CARING son who helps at home and strives hard at school is our first Super Kids nominee.
Alistair Penman (14), of Wimbotsham, also has to cope with a number of disabilities, including Asperger Syndrome (a form of autism), asthma and a rare dysfunction in his larynx.

Last year, he suffered a further blow when his father, William, had to undergo radiation treatment and lengthy chemotherapy for advanced cancer.

Alistair's mother, Lynnette, who nominated him for a Super Kids award, said: "This went on for over a year with long visits to hospital and sleepless nights."

Mrs Penman has multiple sclerosis and often needs Alistair's practical care and support at home when she is unwell.

She said: "Alistair helps with nearly every function of every day to some degree, from housework to gardening. There is nothing he wouldn't do, yet he does not ask for much."

Alistair attends Downham High School where, despite his difficulties, he is making good progress.

"He has worked hard at school and was moved up two grades," said Mrs Penman.

Drama is his great interest. He took the role of high priest Annas in the school's production of Jesus Christ Superstar and also loves working backstage. "Lighting and sound are his dream," she went on.

Alistair attends the Grace Community Church in Stow Bridge and takes an active role in the Young Carers organisation.

If he wins a Super Kids award, Alistair plans to support Islington runner Maria Futter. She is taking part in this year's London Marathon in memory of cystic fibrosis sufferer Nicola Cowen, the sister of a former Lynn News Super Kid award winner, Lisa Cowen.

Mrs Penman added: "I think what makes Alistair worthy of an award is that he has his own disabilities and has overcome so much."
