North Pickenham: Rest and remember Gerald

TWO public seats, made from recycled plastic bottles, have been installed and dedicated to two former parish councillors at North Pickenham.
One of the seats, at Breckland Green in South Pickenham Road, bears a small plaque in memory of the late Gerald Ducker and the other, in Houghton Lane nearer to St Andrew's Church, remembers the late Rev Geoff Platt.
North Pickenham Parish Council went to a Suffolk company which employs disabled people and specialises in making durable and weather and vandal-resistant street furniture for the seats. They were bought and installed for a total of about £680.
Parish council chairman Jill Ball said the seat at Breckland Green is situated close to what was the entrance to the American air base during the latter stages of the Second World War – a site with a memorial still visited by some of the aircrew who flew from there and their relatives.
Villager Mr Ernest Parke took along a scrapbook of cuttings, showing the US Air Force activities at North Pickenham, to the recent dedication ceremony.
Mr Ducker's widow, Ruby, and some other relatives living locally, as well as parish councillors and villagers were at the ceremony, where Necton rector, the Rev Stephen Thorp, performed the dedication.
Mrs Ball said Rev Platt was a former rector and schoolteacher. "He was someone a lot of people could talk to and they remember that in the village and are sorry that he has gone," she said.
The seat in Houghton Lane replaces one that was there many years ago. Mrs Ball said unfortunately Rev Platt's family did not live locally and the parish council was unable to find any of his relatives to attend that dedication.
She said: "Both the seats are already being well used."
