DRIVERS speeding on residential roads and dogs fouling in public places were two of the main issues raised with police at a Swaffham street briefing last week.
Swaffham's Safer Neighbourhood Team organised the get-together in Sporle Road, where there were also representatives from Peddars Way Housing Association, Breckland Council, the Family Welfare Association, the Iceni Partnership and local air cadets. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service took along a fire truck.

Inspector Ady Porter, head of Swaffham Police, said between 30 and 40 adults living in the area of Sporle Road, Manor Way and Orford Road turned out to speak to the officers and other agencies during the two-hour briefing.

"The issues they raised with us were speeding on roads in that area, dogs fouling in public places and green areas, and the state of Orford Road Playing Field," he said. "But they don't appear to have any massive anti-social behaviour problems."

Insp Porter said the police would be finding out when the speeding problem occurs and whether motorists were taking short-cuts through the area, with a view to taking preventative action.

And they would be working with Breckland Council to try to sort out the dog fouling problem.

A supervised litter pick took place in the area and the 20 or so children taking part were provided with equipment for the task and high-visibility safety jackets. They were rewarded with ice creams for their efforts.

Officers from the SNT also carried out free property and cycle security marking for residents at the briefing.

PC Linda McComish, from the Swaffham SNT, said: "A street briefing puts us and the other agencies in a place that is convenient for people to visit. We hope it brings neighbours together and encourages community spirit."

Insp Porter added: "It is showing a different side of the police and making us more accessible to the public and they can have their say."
