SWAFFHAM'S Hamond's High School's head boy and girl were among a lucky group of students from seven Norfolk schools at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebrations in London on Friday.
Jordan Smith and Chelsea Christensen were the only West Norfolk representatives among the Norfolk schools' contingent on the trip organised by Rainbow Nations, in partnership with Norfolk County Council.

They were at the televised concert in Hyde Park, where the performers included Razorlight, Amy Winehouse, Sugababes, Leona Lewis, Jamelia, Simple Minds, Queen and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

And they saw an impressive line-up of comperes paying tribute to the former South African president and human rights campaigner, including Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Robert De Niro, Lewis Hamilton, Annie Lennox and Peter Gabriel.

Rainbow Nations' work in teaching global citizenship and leadership skills in schools is inspired by and based on South Africa, including Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

With the others in the group, Jordan and Chelsea have been carrying out an assignment on leadership, including researching Mr Mandela's story and his work as a global leader. Their combined work will make up a booklet to be distributed among schools in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Group members achieved their places at the 46664 Concert in Hyde Park by writing a report on why they should attend. The event was named after Mr Mandela's prison number – he was the 466th prisoner in 1964.
