GREAT news this week that Downham Amateur Dramatics Society (DADS), has finally found a new affordable home for its costumes and props.
Denver Reading Room is the new venue – and it also offers the luxury of a spare room for scenery painting.

DADS say that donations of any unwanted gifts or other items suitable for raffles are always welcome by the group and can, if necessary, be collected and of course, now more spaciously stored.

If you have anything you think DADS might be able to use, please contact John Roust on 01366 383233

Later this month DADS will be entering two teams into the Hunstanton Drama Festival on Saturday, June 28 at the Princess Theatre. One will be performing "Counselling" at 5pm, and the other will present "The Allotment" at 7.30pm. Tickets for each show cost just cost £5.

On Sunday, July 20, the group's activities continue with a summer celebration barbecue to which all supporters are invited.

Some grub will be provided, but if you want to go along then call on 01366 500616 to co-ordinate the food contributions.

Starting at 3pm, the barbecue will be held at 7 Fitton Road, St. Germans. By the way, you are also asked to take your own drink.

Assuming they've all slept it off by then, readings for DADS' next production "Just Like That" will be taking place on Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22 at 7.30pm at 57 Ryston End. Anyone with an interest but unable to attend on either date may contact the play's author, Steve Harper, on 01366 383328.

  • The first of the Downham Methodist Church car boot sales, organised by local business people Dan and Gina Blackwell, attracted 16 pitchers, crowds of bustling buyers and a healthy £50 in entry donations for the local Obsessive Compulsive Disorder group. The next sale is on Saturday, June 28, from 10am to about 1pm; pitches, costing £5 cars and £8 vans can be booked by telephoning the Blackwells on 01366 381496.

  • Finally, I think I've stumbled on a best-kept secret. And yes, I know I'm not exactly encouraging people into Downham on this occasion, but this is definitely an available resource well worth considering.

With a daughter and a grandson, we enjoyed a Sunday service of a different kind by taking the Coast Hopper bus from Downham to Hunstanton. The service, which also picks up from Hilgay and Denver, runs most weeks throughout the summer and costs a reasonable £7 adult and £5 child, with under-5s travelling free; £15 family tickets also available.

We left the Hollies at 9.45am and returned from Hunstanton at 4.45pm. If we had wanted to, we could have taken the Coast Hopper, at no extra cost, to travel further afield to Cromer and Sheringham. If you want to find out more, full details and dates are available from our tourist information office.
