A RECENT drive by Downham Police to monitor and curb speeding along London Road showed a significant number of drivers exceeding the speed limit.
On average, I understand, ten motorists an hour were caught, one of whom was clocked at 59mph. Dangerous stuff, especially when you consider we'll have even more traffic pulling on and off the road when the new development on the old Jim Russell site goes up.
n The use of the ultrasonic anti-teen Mosquito devices outside the Priory Centre and at Tesco are seen as a basic breach of human rights to some and a successful deterrent to others.
Before the Mosquito, library staff were sometimes called to escort young people outside, and through the crowds of other (perceived as intimidating or threatening) young people gathered there; also, before the Mosquito, the area was seen to be a safe, central and well-lit place for those same (street) young people to gather.
The Crime Reduction Partnership is responsible for installation of the Priory Centre Mosquito while Tesco got one because it is a shop.
However, I now understand that both machines will be switched off in a fortnight.
Meanwhile, the real dilemma still remains. Where can our young people safely and happily regularly go?

- Latest news on the purchase of our town hall points to the sale being completed by the end of the month, while work on the transformation of the old fire station site into a car park is now underway.
- Finally, there is a coffee morning in the town hall tomorrow, from 9.30am to noon to which all are welcome.
This is a new event by the Royal British Legion's women's section in Wimbotsham.
The group is also holding a party on Wednesday, April 30, for which tickets are now available. For more details contact June Stocking on 01366 500301
