WITH the football season now well and truly launched, I must indulge in a short resume of my four visits to Norwich City so far.
As indicated in an earlier piece, I've inherited a season ticket from a friend who is unwell.

There was a shock on the opening day when the Sanders coach at Highfield car park was full and I was unable to get on board. Great start to the campaign!

Fortunately a car owner in a similar stew offered to drive a couple of us in and all turned out well, apart from the game which was a very indifferent draw with Blackpool.

Complaints to the coach company resulted in a double decker for the Birmingham fixture. This was a wonderful treat, riding on top and looking out over the glorious countryside between Fakenham and the city on a sun-filled afternoon. The match was much better, too.

The less said about the evening fixture against QPR, the better. Norwich were woeful.

Finally, a win on another sun-baked day with a super strike at the death to take all three points from Sheffield United.

The Fakenham faithful always seem to travel with optimism, which is something I really like, and is perhaps the hallmark of a true supporter.

Despite all the setbacks surrounding the team, its management and future control, the turnout for home fixtures is amazing with 24,000 virtually the norm. That figure would surely be the envy of quite a few of our Premiership outfits.

  • A flower festival with a difference opens on Thursday in the parish church. It should be an amazing spectacle and full of fun.

A Victorian Experience focuses on how our predecessors spent their leisure time, interpreting all manner of games and pastimes through flowers.

How about this for an assortment of possibilities – maypole dancing, puppetry, magic lantern, juggling, dominoes, cards, bagatelle, nine men's morris, music, kite flying, croquet, picnics and pub games. There are 27 displays in all, every one sponsored by local individuals or businesses.

Part of the church will be given over to a Victorian Emporium, a 19th century equivalent to one of our craft and food markets.

The festival runs until next Monday and the church is open from 10am to 5pm. Entrance is free, with a brochure explaining all the exhibits available at £1. A grand draw will be held daily.

Soprano Jayne May-Sysum will perform A Bouquet of Song on the Saturday evening at 7.30pm, tickets for which are £8. These can be bought in church or from the parish office on 01328 862268.
