WHAT do we do with our market square now the warmer weather is on its way? I feel it cries out to be filled with some sort of activity during the week and at weekends.
This kind of intimate space in most European countries would doubtless have its share of open-air cafes and eateries. Sadly, our square is faced by blank walls for the most part and a recently-departed Woolworths store.
Every Thursday, of course,
there's a magic transformation when the market comes to town, the traffic is barred and hundreds of people meander from stall to stall. It's the one weekday when Fakenham throws off its quiet demeanour and enjoys a mood swing which communicates itself unmistakably.
People visit not just to buy – though that is obviously important – but also to talk, which I think is equally important. On the fourth Saturday of every month, the square hosts the popular farmers' market with its greater emphasis on fruit, vegetables and other culinary delights. Again, this attracts big crowds and transforms the middle of the town with a mood of celebration.
At one time musicians played along for an hour or so to keep things upbeat. It is probably impossible to even consider more markets, though some of us might be pleased with the idea.
But I do wonder whether there could be some kind of enterprise, perhaps an exhibition, which could more often enliven this attractive but neglected space.
And particularly so during what we must all hope will be a long and sunny summer.
- Think of rugby and the image is doubtless of tough guys ploughing into each other with little thought of what damage they might incur. Think again, and especially in Fakenham, and the image must now include tough girls engaged in a similar pursuit.
I'm told they all do it for fun, but Fakenham Foxes, based at our local rugby club just back from the Sports Centre, is on the lookout for new members.
Training is Wednesday nights from 6.45pm to 8.30pm. There are opportunities for teenagers to play at under-18 level as well as a senior team aged up to 45. Rugby, they say, is fun, fast and physical and a great way to keep fit.
In addition to chasing an odd-shaped ball, the ladies also enjoy a strong social programme of nights out and tours. Although this season is now on the wane, if you are interested in the idea of scrums, mauls, line-outs and the like, please contact Mandy on 07730 877072. There's a website with more information on www.fakenhamrugby.com
- I notice our cinema is putting on extra screenings at lunch times each market day. These are to attract customers who may have spent the morning around the stalls and might like the idea of seeing a top film before returning home.
