THE idea of an alcohol-free zone in the middle of town has been explored before and nothing ever came of it.
One of the first requirements has to be a definition of just how far any such zone will extend. If it can't be effectively policed there's little point in stretching the boundaries.
I know a successful scheme has been in operation in Sheringham for some time and our council is looking to benefit from their experience.
With a relatively new police inspector and a Mayor, Jayne Cubitt, who only stepped up to the plate in May, perhaps their joint determination to tackle this problem will drive it further forward than has happened in the past.
- It's hardly unusual these days to see town centre shops and businesses empty and up for rent or sale.
But somehow the sight of the W J Aldiss fashion store on the market place clearing its shelves and racks of clothes and shoes is something completely different. It's been there so long I guess no-one ever expected it to go.The façade is inscribed with words that don't carry much significance for today's shopper; words like drapery, millinery and mantles. I suppose it's unlikely but it would be nice to think they could stay there.

This time round things will be different as for the first time in my life I've become a season ticket holder. Having never made a commitment like this before it remains to be seen how things work out.
