I'M not a cyclist myself but I am thoroughly in favour of encouraging others to be – hopefully in as safe a way as possible.
Dedicated cycle routes seem to be an extremely good idea, particularly if they can help students get to and from school.

What better than cycle paths throughout Hunstanton, serving schools and other areas? What better than a cycle route, avoiding the main road, from Heacham to Hunstanton?

Many people have been pedalling towards these goals for many years.

Just where are we now? Agreement in principal was reached some time ago. Work was to start this month. It was put off until May and now has been deferred until August. I don't know the reasons for this procrastination but just find it annoying.

So often, and it's not just with cycle paths, we have well-justified schemes and projects which keep getting delayed and/or shelved. Very frustrating.

  • One of the town's distinguishing features is the clock on the town hall. It used to have a bell but now doesn't. Actually the bell is still there in its cupola but hasn't struck the hours since the original mechanical clock was replaced with an electrical mechanism in the 1960s. Prior to that the bell was driven from the clock by a somewhat convoluted system of wires and pulleys that needed very regular maintenance and greasing.

I hear that the bell cupola is leaning and could be dangerous and that the clock itself needs urgent attention.

Whatever remedies are taken, it's going to be expensive. The money must be found somehow. The town hall without its clock and that rather cute cupola would be a serious and unthinkable loss to the town.
