Dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer are that much closer for a nine-year-old dancer from South Wootton after she won a place at the Royal Ballet School in London.
Olivia Patterson was shortlisted for The Associate Programme last year after auditioning with a group of friends, but she was determined to return in May with hopes of success.
She said: “I was excited and nervous and we had to audition for an hour. I’ve been dancing since I was three years old and I love learning new things and meeting new people.
“I’m really excited to start in September. I’d love to be a professional ballet dancer.”
Her mother, Becky, added: “We’re so proud of her. She loves dancing and is always dancing around the house with her younger sister, who also loves dancing. We were so shocked and surprised to hear she had got in. We weren’t expecting to hear so soon.
“Olivia is very fortunate to have been given this opportunity and we’re really excited for her.”
The youngster has been dancing at Noise and Chance School of Dance, on the North Lynn Industrial Estate for years and is passionate about ballet.
Principal Trina Lee said: “I can’t tell you how excited I am for her, such a rare opportunity and every little girl’s dream! This is a new venture for both of us because I will be attending a teachers’ session to observe how they train their dancers.”
The Associate Programme nurtures young, talented students between the ages of eight and 15 in pursuit of excellence in pre-vocational classical ballet training. The course is designed to boost the current training of young dancers, while introducing them to The Royal Ballet School’s System of Training, alongside other gifted children who aspire to a career in dance.
Pupils continue to study with their regular dance teacher in addition to their Associate classes, and may have opportunities to perform with The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and other ballet companies.
Many of the young dancers have progressed through the school and into the Royal Ballet Companies.
Olivia will start Associate classes in Covent Garden, London, from September to the following July, taking part in 24 sessions. Classes will include classical ballet, national dance, historical dance and many more.
