A History of Lynn in 100 Objects by John A Davies and Tim Pestell

The History Press £14.99

It was a concept started by Neil McGregor, director of the British Museum, who starred in the BBC series A History of the World in 100 Objects.

He said: “Objects [are] prisms through which we can explore past times.”

It was that series that inspired us here at the Lynn News to start our series A History of Lynn in 100 Objects with Lynn Museum.

And now there is a local book to go with it too on the theme, A Hisotry of Norfolk in 100 Objects.

This does exactly what it says on the tin – well, cover – taking objects as diverse as the Shouldham Sword and a Norwich City football shirt to tell the history of this county over the past million years.

Other items featured include Seahenge, the Snettisham Treasure and the Walsingham Ampulla.

It is a fascinating and expert dissection of items in our museums by a chief curator at Nrofolk Museums Service and a senior curator of archaeology at Norwich Castle Museum, but one that is accessible to those with only a passing acquaintance with the subject.

Well worth considering putting on the Christmas book-buying list.
