Holkham Estate, on the north Norfolk coast, has an exciting outdoor theatre programme for this summer set against the estate’s 18th century, six-acre walled gardens.
The season starts with A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Wednesday, July 20 at 7pm. One of Shakespeare’s best-loved comedies, this version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set in 1950s America.
Audiences should expect Grease meets Return to the Forbidden Planet as 1950s America comes to life with all of Shakespeare’s wonderful poetry, drama and imagination. This classic is brought to Holkham by the acclaimed drama school The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
On Wednesday, August 3, at 6.15pm, Quantum theatre presents Once Upon a Time there were Four Little Rabbits. In this production Beatrix Potter tells her first tale of Peter Rabbit, who knows only too well that he is not to go into Mr McGregor’s garden! Follow the scrapes and escapades of Potter’s favourite characters in a magical and enchanting experience for young and old alike.
The walled gardens will provide the perfect setting for Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s Peter Pan on Wednesday, August 10, at 6.15pm. Join Wendy, Michael and John Darling on their adventures with Peter, far away on the magical island of Neverland. J.M.Barrie’s timeless classic is brought to life in a brand new adaptation by award winning writer Laura Turner, with original music and songs, and beautifully designed costumes. Join Peter and his friends for what promises to be a magical summer evening.
The Scarlet Pimpernel on Wednesday, August 17, at 6.15pm takes the audience back to Paris in 1792. Each day scores of the French nobility are sent to the guillotine. But rumours whisper of a league of young English gentlemen of unparalleled daring who are risking their lives to spirit aristocrats across the channel. With original songs, spectacular sword fights and a little bit of romance there is something for the whole family to enjoy in this exciting and swashbuckling musical adventure.
On Wednesday, August 24 at 6.15pm join Heartbreak Productions brand new open air show as they perform Ratburger, a modern thriller that promises to deliver a blend of dark reality and empowering comedy for children. After the phenomenal success of their adaptation of Mr Stink, Heartbreak Productions are back with the theatrical premiere of David Walliams book, Ratburger, cleverly adapted for the outdoor stage.
Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing draws to a close the outdoor theatre events at Holkham with a spectacular performance on Wednesday, August 31, at 7pm. Audience members are invited to bring a chair and a picnic and spend a glorious summer’s evening watching this funny, moving and fast-paced production of one of Shakespeare’s best-‐loved comedies. Performed in the open air, by The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, an all male cast with Elizabethan costume, music and dance, this is undoubtedly one of the hottest tickets of the summer.
