A charity concert will be given by the East Anglian Ex-Forces Big Band at King’s Lynn Academy on Saturday in aid of Help for Heroes.
The band was formed in 2009 by Alan Norris & Bob Airzee both ex-members of the Regimental Band of the 1st Bn Royal Anglian Regt.
The members of the band are ex-military musicians, many of whom continue to play professionally and to date they have performed nine concerts and have raised over £15,000 for H4H.
Mr Norris, the musical director, was at the then Gaywood Park School for Boys from 1957-1961.
After leaving school he joined the 1st Bn East Anglian Regiment, serving 25 years before he retired from the forces in 1987 with the rank of Warrant Officer class 1
He is still heavily involved in music and runs his own big band. As well as working with young musicians in a junior swing band based at March.
Also in the band on tenor sax is local man Chris Smith who also attended Gaywood Park School 30 years ago. Chris served in the 3rd Bn Royal Anglian Regimental Band and now lives with his family in Colchester, Essex.
In the trumpet section is Scott Chapman, who is ex-USAF and also lives in Lynn.
Other members of the band travel from all over the country to take part – and one of the saxophone players even travels all the way from Cyprus.
The concert will include big band favourites from the 1940s to the present day.
The musicians are giving their time freely so all proceeds from the concert will going to boost the funds of Help for Heroes.
Tickets at £10 adults or £5 under 16s and students are on sale from Daryle Taylor on 07840 120112; they will also be available on the door. There will be refreshments available and also a raffle.
The concert start at 7.30pm, with the doors open from 6.30pm.
