All Our Yesterdays: August memories from Downham Market, King’s Lynn and Swaffham





In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature we look back to the month of August, in 2004, 2012 and 2015…

August 2015: A new allotment at North Lynn Discovery Centre was officially opened by borough mayor, Colin Manning, joined here by local youngsters and adult helpers. Youth worker Thomas White said: “We want this allotment to be used by young people across West Norfolk.”

August 2015: Free muffins were on the menu when BB’s Coffee and Muffins coffee shop opened in Lynn’s Vancouver Quarter. There were 1,100 free muffins handed out to customers on each of the first four Tuesdays that month. August 2015: People gathered across West Norfolk for VJ Day services marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Royal British Legion organised events in Downham and this picture shows Standards being lowered during the parade.

August 2004: New Swaffham store Waitrose showed its caring side when presenting a £2,500 cheque to Swaffham and District Mental Health Association. This followed the official store opening the previous day in the converted former Safeway supermarket off Castle Acre Road. The group’s chairman, Eddie Doran (left) receives the cheque from department manager Phil Wakefield. They were joined by town mayor Pam Buxton, store staff and other association supporters.

August 2004: Love is … a well-kept garden for John and Thelma Warren, who were judged to have the best one in Swaffham Town Council’s Best Kept Garden competition for the second year running.

August 2012: Keen gardeners were going for gold in the Freebridge Sheltered Scheme gardening competition – and the prizewinners show off their awards after the judging.

August 2012: After cooking the dinners for the West Norfolk Pop-in Centre for 15 years, Pauline Crump decided to hang up her apron and celebrate her retirement. She is pictured at the centre based at the London Road Methodist Church rooms in Lynn where a party was held to mark the occasion.

August 2012: It’s hard work, but so rewarding, say members of Downham Allotment Association, who were ready to welcome newcomers for the plots available in Rouses Lane. Taking a break on the edge of a raised bed is Jeremy Winder and from left are the group’s secretary Angela Sadler, Pauline Norman, Nigel Olding, Arthur Butler and Joyce Day.

August 2012: New ideas to encourage pride in their town and extra effort for Anglia in Bloom earned recognition for Downham Guides. Sian Fouracre (left) was a runner-up along with Olivia Knapp. The winner, Meg Matthews was unable to attend the presentation and her winning working model of Downham town clock is held by town mayor Robin Pegg and sponsor Maureen Hibling of Sew Inn.
