All Our Yesterdays: July good sports in King’s Lynn, West Walton, Gaywood and Houghton




July 2006: A crowd of around 2,000 saw Lynn Stars beat local rivals Mildenhall by 52-41 in a Premier League fixture at the Norfolk Arena. That season the Stars were Premier Trophy champions and also picked up the KO Cup. This action was from Heat 1 and from left are Troy Batchelor (Stars), Richard Hall (Mildenhall), Jason Lyons (Mildenhall) and Kevin Doolan (Stars).

July 2002: Denver Sailing Club members raised £1,400 to purchase a new Taz boat which was to be used for training young people and adults – and pictured here are some excited scouts from Downham eager to have a go.

July 2001: This was the Marshland High School girls’ first hockey team which took on a touring American under 17 team at Lynnsport. July 2001: Shot putt prospect Paul Bowen (14) of Park High School, Lynn, was looking forward to the All England Schools championships after shooting up the rankings. He had only started in earnest in April, broke his school record, then progressed through the West Norfolk championships, followed by the county finals and the Eastern Region championships. Paul is pictured with his coach David Bye; at the back are head of PE Gerry Bird, Paul’s dad Don and PE teacher Nigel Kirtland.

July 1999: These artistic gymnasts from the Lynnsport-based Lynn Gym Club secured excellent scores in county and regional championships to climb up the rankings tables. July 1999: There were close finishes galore at Lynn Primary School Sports Association annual town sports, with more than 400 children taking part. Pictured here are the Fairstead competitors, all smiles after lifting the “most sporting team” trophy.

July 2006: New sprint records were set at Lynn KES sports day by Fay Skerritt (left) in the 100m and Alex Moore in the 200m. In the centre is Lewis Ely who finished twelfth in the All-England Schools Championships senior boys high jump event.

July 2013: Here is one happy group among the 2,000 women who took part in the Race For Life fundraiser at Houghton Hall, following a 5K route and raising money for Cancer Research UK at the same time.
