All Our Yesterdays: November good causes in Fakenham, Hilgay, King’s Lynn and Swaffham




In our weekly All Our Yesterdays feature, we look back at the news in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2013.

November 2008: Dinner ladies at Lynn’s Springwood High School did their bit for Pudsey by dressing as chavs for the day and raising £147 for Children in Need. From left are Julie Olive, Martine Williamson, Nicola Jackling, Sarah Giffen, Elaine Grange, Donna O’Callaghan and Jane Southwell.

November 2007: Intrepid fundraisers take part in a sponsored walk from Hunstanton seafront to South Wootton in aid of the children’s ward at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The organiser, Louise Leake, is pictured centre at the front and she had wanted to thank staff on the Rudham ward for their treatment of her son Gianna.

November 2005: Three organisations helping people in the Swaffham area received a total of £2,750 from the proceeds of July’s Carnival in the town. Carnival committee chairman Paul Southerton (centre) watches as, foreground, Carnival Queen Jenna Fountain presents £2,000 to Jackie Hargreaves for the Olive Tree Project, in the centre, Carnival Princess Bethany Rudd gives £500 to Sue Rowling for St John Ambulance, and left, Carnival Prince Simon Green presents £250 to Susan Ashford for Swaffham Lionesses.

November 2005: Norfolk Mini Owners’ Club public relations secretary, Craig Scott (left), presents £1,500 to air ambulance fundraiser Chris Donaldson on behalf of the Lynn News Helipad Appeal. The money had been raised at the club’s Mini Day Show held at Fakenham Racecourse in May that year.

November 2013: Hundreds of entries were submitted by local schools for a Christmas card design challenge set by Red Wellies (the Lisa Wiles Brain Tumour Support Fund) and Hardwick Sainsbury’s store in Lynn. Budding artists Harry Reed, Lucy Elsegood and Isabelle Summers are pictured showing off the winning designs with help from Red Wellies secretary Mervyn Wiles and Sainsbury’s PR ambassador Lisa Carter-Hall.

November 2013: Staff at the Oxfam charity shop in Lynn were delighted with the response for donations to help people caught up in Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated the Philippines. A total of £650 in donations was received in three days. Pictured are supervisor Kerry Allen, left, and manager Jane Hoskins.

November 2013: Three Fakenham butchers held a banger of a fundraiser when taking part in Movember. The team at Papworth Butchers decided to forego the razor in memory of the manager’s late father who was known for his moustache. John Johnson (centre) said he would shave off his moustache at the end of the month and is joined here by Richard Hurst (left) and Alex Pendleton.

November 2013: Former Tory MP and Minister, Ann Widdecombe, was guest speaker at a charity dinner at Lynn Town Hall in support of the West Norfolk branch of Macmillan Cancer Support. November 2013: Lynn binmen helped splash the cash with their efforts at Hilgay Raft Race. The team raised £1,004 – the most money raised by any team in more than 10 years. They duly received the trophy for the most sponsorship raised and with the cup are Chris Shaw, past president of Downham Rotary (sponsors of the event) and Scott Auker.
