Before the outbreak of the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic, one of the deadliest disasters in modern history had occurred on Sunday morning, December 26, 2004, when nearly 230,000 people lost their lives in what was to be known as the Boxing Day Tsunami.

A powerful undersea earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra island, Indonesia, which caused the Indian Ocean floor to suddenly rise 40 metres, triggering a massive tsunami.

It was not long before 30m waves started pounding coastlines in Asia and entire towns and villages were devastated.
